Casting the Axe

So yesterday we took a trip out to the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum for a day class in bronze axe making.

It certainly opened my eyes.

I would never have guessed at the amount of work, knowledge and skill involved in bronze work.

To be honest I hadn't even been aware that bronze was copper mixed with approx 10% tin.

Great fun.

Woodland Home

I long for a low-impact woodland home of my own one day. (via MAKE)

An allegory

Melancholia - memories of mortality. A weaving with black grass from the garden that will gradually dry, pale, become brittle, disintegrate. An allegory.

Homemade Tipples

Eggnog

6 Large eggs
3/4 cups Sugar
1 1/2 cups Brandy
1/2 cups Rum
4 cups Milk
2 cups Cream
Vanilla Syrup
Nutmeg to sprinkle

Separate the yolks from the whites of the eggs. Beat the yolks slowly while simultaneously adding the sugar; do this until the mixture is pale and golden. Now slowly add in the brandy and rum, then beat in the milk and half the cream.

Set aside until just before serving, then whisk the egg whites until stiff and fold them into the eggnog mixture.
